Recipe – Tamarind Chutney

Tamarind Chutney

Prep Time: 1 hour

Cooking Time: 20 minutes

Serves: 8


  • Tamarind: 1 cup
  • Oil: 2 Teaspoon
  • Cumin seeds: ½ Teaspoon
  • Red Chili Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Sugar or Jaggery (Gur): 1 cup
  • Black Salt: 1 Teaspoon
  • Chat Masala or Garam Masala Powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Ginger: 1/2 inch piece
  • Green chili: 2
  • Water: 3 cups


  • Deseed the Tamarind and soak it in water for minimum 1 hour.
  • In a bowl place a sieve and pour the soaked tamarind with the soaked water. Using spoon or hand squeeze out all the pulp from the tamarind.
  • Blend ginger and chili to paste.
  • Heat oil in a pan, add cumin seeds, and when it changes color, add ginger-chili paste, red chili powder, chat masala. Cook for 2 minutes.
  • Add tamarind pulp, water and salt. Boil it for 8-10 minutes.
  • Add sugar or jaggery, boil again for 5-6 minutes or till the sugar dissolves.
  • Let it cool and preserve it in an air-tight container.
