Recipe – Dalia Khichdi / Moong dal Dalia / Broken Wheat Khichdi / Fada Khichdi

Ingredients

  • Dalia (Broken wheat): ½ Cup
  • Moong Dal: ½ Cup
  • Water: 3 Cup
  • Salt: ½ Tablespoon or to taste
  • Ghee or Oil: 2 Tablespoon
  • Cumin Seeds: ½ Teaspoon
  • Ginger, green chili and garlic: Crushed or paste, 1 Teaspoon
  • Dried Red Chili: 1, broken into 2 pieces
  • Bay leaf: 1
  • Cloves: 2
  • Cinnamon: ½ inch stick
  • Asafetida (Hing): 1 pinch
  • Turmeric Powder (Haldi): ½ Teaspoon
  • Red Chili Powder: ¼ Teaspoon or as required
  • Cumin powder: 1 teaspoon
  • Onion: 1 medium sized, chopped
  • Tomato: 1 Medium sized, chopped
  • Cauliflower: ¼ Cup, finely chopped
  • Carrot: ¼ Cup, finely chopped
  • Green beans: ¼ Cup, finely chopped
  • Green Peas: ¼ Cup
  • Lemon Juice: ½ tablespoon
  • Coriander leaves: 1 tablespoon

Method

  • Mix dalia and moong dal in a bowl and wash it 2-3 times. Soak in water for 10 minutes.
  • Soak the chopped vegetables: cauliflower, carrot, beans and peas in water.
  • Heat ghee in a pressure cooker or heavy pan, add cumin seeds and when it changes color, add dried red chili, bay leaf, cloves and cinnamon stick. Wait for 30 seconds.
  • Add onion and ginger-garlic-chili paste. Sauté till onions are semi-transparent. Add tomatoes and cook till tomatoes are done.
  • Add the drained dalia-moong dal and drained vegetables, turmeric powder, salt, red chili powder, cumin powder. Mix everything well and sauté for 4 minutes.
  • Add water and let it boil.
  • Medium the heat and cover the lid. Cook till 3-4 whistles or 15 minutes in heavy pan.
  • Open the cooker lid. Allow the steam to escape before opening the lid.
  • Add lemon juice and coriander leaves
  • Serve hot.
