Most people prefer work benches that are made up of a single material. For instance, those are doing carpentry generally favor an all-wood bench. But things are changing these days. Because wood may cost some money, some work bench makers are making benches that with wood tops and steel legs. Steel legs are as tough as solid wood legs. The best thing is that steel is a lot cheaper material than wood, so youll really save some money with a bench with wooden top and steel legs. Most bench legs are fixed. However, adjustable legs are becoming popular these days. Adjusting the height of the bench legs is helpful when two or more person is sharing one work bench. The top should be leveled with the waist so that work can be done with ease. Obviously, it would be a great hassle for the individual with a shorter stature to work on a tall workbench. But there would be no problem at all if the work bench legs are adjustable.
Bench Height: This is probably the most important aspect for the piano player. Correct height allows for correct posture and proper finger placement. A standard size bench is typically 19 high. Because people vary in size, adjustable piano benches are available with the turn of the wrist. And now, even the push of a button, with an electric adjustable piano bench! Adjustable benches adjust in height from about 17 ½ up to 21. This allows for those who prefer the bench height slightly lower or slightly higher than the standard 19 height found on most non-adjustable benches.
If you find that there is a specific part of the lift where you struggle try to drive through that part even quicker if possible. I will talk about sticking points in a future article. Keep driving the bar upwards as fast as you can and with as much power as you can until your elbows lock out and your arms are straight. There are many specific lock out exercises but I will delve into these deeper in another article. In 2005 I could bench press what I though was a very respectable 120kg and then I met my friend Dave Bulldog Beattie and he changed my perspective of what I thought was a good bench press. Watching him bench press close to 300kg made me realize I had to improve. He taught me the above principles and in 2009 I finished second in the WPC World Powerlifing Championship and benched 285kg just six months after injuring my pectoral muscle in a raw competition. My best raw bench press in competition is 225kg in 2008.
