First, why do you need coffee tables and end tables - or either one of these? Many use them simply for show, and rarely for coffee. Others use them only when they have guests while yet others actually use them in the course of a normal day for their primary intended use.
For ease of serving and cleaning, I like to use Stoneware/CorningWare serving dishes, that can easily go from the oven to your table. Stoneware is attractive, microwave proof and even oven proof. Right from your oven to your table, eliminating extra dishes, pots and pans. Another reason you need table padding, to save your table from the heat of serving dishes.
There always seem to be some confusion about these two styles of tables. Originally, a console table had just two legs and was mounted to the wall, allowing it to look as if it were standing on just two legs, as the bracket was invisible. In later years, some console tables gained a second pair of legs, making them much more like their sofa backing counterparts. The very word console means ledge, and these tables were inspired by the desire to have a shelf in a convenient location, especially in a hallway. Designers simply added legs to give them more stability as well as drama.
