Leg Style. I can tell right away when the bench is a replacement bench and not the bench that originally came with the piano by the fact that most people have a bench that does not have legs to match the leg style of the piano. I may be a little bit of a stickler about this but you should be able to find a bench to match and you should make the effort to find one since it will be a part of your home for decades. Most benches are available with classic straight legs, spade legs, and sometimes antique types of legs such as Louis XIV are available.
If you find that there is a specific part of the lift where you struggle try to drive through that part even quicker if possible. I will talk about sticking points in a future article. Keep driving the bar upwards as fast as you can and with as much power as you can until your elbows lock out and your arms are straight. There are many specific lock out exercises but I will delve into these deeper in another article. In 2005 I could bench press what I though was a very respectable 120kg and then I met my friend Dave Bulldog Beattie and he changed my perspective of what I thought was a good bench press. Watching him bench press close to 300kg made me realize I had to improve. He taught me the above principles and in 2009 I finished second in the WPC World Powerlifing Championship and benched 285kg just six months after injuring my pectoral muscle in a raw competition. My best raw bench press in competition is 225kg in 2008.
One of the most critical aspects of bench setup is foot placement. To understand why this is, you must first understand that the bench press is a total body movement. The pecs, delts, and triceps are your main movers, but your entire musculature must be tense, tight, and in proper position if you want to increase your bench press. The most important element of this total body coordination in the bench press is the use of leg drive. If you have ever done any kind of floor press, or benched with your feet elevated, you can appreciate the strong, stable base your feet can give you for the bench press.
