Neither of these methods is better than the other. If you have been following the most common method of just lying straight down on the bench and pressing, it may seem strange that either of them is helpful or beneficial to a big bench press. You should experiment with both and find out which one helps you get into position more easily. The method that allows you get the best foot placement and best body position in relation to the resting barbell is the one you should choose. Dont worry if this is still confusing; the rest of the article will make clear what these starting methods have to do with getting a good setup.
Personally the top of my bench press is my weak point. I can push a lot of weight halfway up from my chest, but finishing the movement has always been a struggle. The fix; floor press, close grip bench press, and Tate press.
The bench press is a three part movement. This may seem silly at first, but think about it this way. First you have the descent, the stretch of your pectorals, second you have the initial push, the engagement of the pecs, and third you have the finish, the engagement and contraction of your triceps. Three parts, two parts that really engage your muscles, and one part that is primarily your weakness.
